Top 10 Reasons to be a Camp Counselor

From Summer days spent under the sun to friendships that will last a lifetime to invaluable work and life experience, there are many reasons to work at summer camp. We’ve compiled a list of the top reasons you should spend a summer as a camp counselor.

1.   Camp is all about fun! You’ll find that your days at camp are filled with activities. You’ll be giggling and smiling your way through it all. There’s never a dull moment at camp. If you thrive in an environment fueled by activity, camp is the right place for you.

2.   At camp, every day provides endless opportunities to exercise your creativity and innovation. What kind of game could you create with a broomstick and a dictionary? Can you turn it into an hours long adventure for 15 ten-year-olds? If you answered yes, being a camp counselor is the job for you.

3.   Camps give you the opportunity disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will have the time and space to unwind, unplug, and relish in the present moment.

4.   Camp counselors get to spend most of their summer in the outdoors, soaking up the sun and breathing in the fresh air. Time spent in the natural environment can be very rejuvenating. Hot days and starry nights ahead!

8.   At camp, you will make some of the best friends you’ll ever have, and many of those friendships will last a lifetime. Camps give you the opportunity to connect and bond with your peers in a way that doesn’t happen in “normal life”. You’ll look forward to returning to camp each and every summer to reconnect with your best friends.

9.   Being a camp counselor will teach you resilience. Like we said, being a camp counselor is hard work. You will need determination, perseverance, and patience to work though the tough days, but once you make it through you will come out feeling more confident and capable of taking on whatever each day throws at you.

10. Camp is all about community. You’ll spend the summer being part of a close-knit group, you’ll get to be a part of something bigger than yourself, and you’ll know that your place at camp matters. Camp is a place where everyone belongs.

5.   At camp you’ll have the opportunity to learn tons of new skills. Have you ever been rock climbing or belayed a climber? Have you ever shot a bow and arrow? Have you ever gone on an overnight camping trip? If you haven’t, camp will not only teach you how, but they will teach you how to teach others as well! And if you have tried these activities before, camp will help you hone your skills enough to teach others and share your craft.

6.   As a camp counselor, you will be making a significant impact on a child’s life. You’ll become their leader and role model. You will help inspire them to be their authentic selves, and you’ll give them the space and resources to do so.

7.   Camp allows you to appreciate the value of hard work. Let’s be real, being a camp counselor is hard work! You’ll be responsible for someone’s child. It’s a big undertaking. But at the end of the day when you see that camper conquering their fears and accomplishing something great, knowing that you made it possible makes it all worth it.
